John Owen McMenemie, how may I try to locate his records or info?

My question is not really directed in regards to Family Tree Maker, however maybe the answer lies within FTM. My ggg grandparents on my father's father side of my tree seem to be a very elusive couple. I don't know of any family records that verify them or their names. Any info I can find is based on possible memories, and you know how that goes,it leaves me with a couple different variations on their names, no dates, and a possible location of origin on my ggg grandfather. I don't know if "origin" refers to place of birth, or last origin before going to Scotland. It feels as though I have searched out my capabilities to locate any info but no results. I consider myself a beginner at this endeaver so I may be passing up the easy and obvious, any suggestions as to what path I might try?
