Fly and Sooter/Suter/Suiter in Carroll Co. TN
Greetings to all you Fly and Sooter researchers.I have enjoyed looking through the messages on this BB and am impressed at the depth of knowledge you have.I am sorry that your "Cousin Jim" is no longer here to help, but I see that your cousin Ed is the beneficiary of Jim's considerable records. Why have I posted this message?Well, while researching Butler, Morris and allied families from Carroll Co. TN and Montgomery Co. NC, I was looking through the 1850 census of Barry Co. MO and saw several Fly and Sooter families, and the name Greenberry Sooter, and I guessed that they had also come from Carroll Co. TN (a large number of families made this trip from TN to MO/AR around 1836-1838, with a few relations moving later at various times).A very useful Sooter post, archived at http://newsfeed.rootsweb.com/th/read/SOOTER/2007-05/1180576051http://newsfeed.rootsweb.com/th/read/SOOTER/2007-05/1180576051, confirmed all this, and contains much detail of interest to Fly researchers.
Question: What is the relationship, if any, of William Sooter Jr. to William L. Butler (whose middle initial is also seen as T. and G.)?Note that a William L/G/T Butler witnessed the 11 Nov 1824 will of William Sooter Jr. in Carroll Co. TN.Were they simply neighbors?I have two possibilities for this William L. Butler. One is William Lowe Butler b. ca. 1803, d. 1 Mar 1841 Little Rock, Pulaski Co. AR, son of James Butler and Charity Lowe; he mar. about 1825 Beulah Peden, dau. of Benjamin Peden (b. 22 Apr 1771 Montgomery Co. VA) and Mary Margaret Reed (b. 22 Sep 1779 Montgomery Co. VA).This William L. Butler was living in Simpson Co. KY in 1822, and then in Carroll Co. KY betw. 1826 and 1837, and was in Pulaski Co. AR by 1840.However, he also inherited land in Carroll Co. TN and appears to have lived there at some time.Note that Christian and Simpson Cos. KY are both on the TN border, and Simpson Co. KY is just n. of Sumner Co. TN where relations of this William L. Butler lived.
The other possibility is William L. Butler b. ca. 1800 NC (probably Montgomery Co. NC), d. ca. 1840 probably in Carroll Co. TN; several of his ch. who all lived in Carroll Co. TN are shown in censuses as born NC, including a ch. b. Oct 1826, which if correct would eliminate this William L. from consideration.
In compensation for your having to read through the above hay, I would like to offer you some data from the 1830 census of Carroll Co. TN (from a transcription, so if you use any of this, you might want to inspect images of the original census).
p. 154: Asher Fly 10001-30001001 (the older female is probably mother of Asher or his wife)
p. 159: L. Suiten 100001-1000101 (this might be Leonard Sooter, son of Wm. Jr.)
p. 163: William Suiter 01000000001-00000000001 (the older ones are b. 1740-50; this might be William Sooter Jr.'s parents)
p. 180: William Capps 112001-01001
p. 181: Wm. Suiter 10001-11001 (prob. Wm. R. Sooter)
p. 182, in this order:
- William Fly 100001-10001
- John H. Brown 00001-10001
- Green B. Suiter 10001-10001 (the given name Greenberry is often found as two words Green Berry, Green B., or G. B.; in the American south, it is usually not spelled Greenbury - that's more of a Maryland spelling)
- Jeremiah Fly 00011001-00010001
In a transcription of the 1840 census of Carroll Co. TN:
p. 59: William R. Sooter 121001-102001 (no other Fly or Sooter etc. listed; the exodus from Carroll Co. to AR/MO occurred mostly before 1840)
You might find other families of interest in this census, but these are the ones I noticed. Thanks for the interesting data you've posted.
