Hi Everyone,A bit of history. In the 1600s to 1800s, Europe was about as wild as US is today. The gaels (jails) were overcrowded by felons, misdemeaners, debtors, and the like.Every vacant house, even ships, were converted into prisons.A prisoner could be "transported" to any of the newly found unsettled parts of the world.Australia was settled by criminals, Georgia, US was settled by criminals. But in order to pay for the transportation, each person was indentured for a time period to a planter, mechanic (blacksmith) etc. for a time period, after which, they were released from their bonds. These indentured servants were sometimes marked as servant class by adding an "S" to the end of their surname. Many kept that "S".The key words for a search are "indentured servant"and "transported".Happy New Year 2007 to all!Tony
