Martha -- really good to hear from you. Our families diverge very quickly after Antonio Gil Cesar Flores arrived in the New World. We are descended from Jose Flores, the fourth of six children of Antonio Gil and his wife (an Y Barbo). That may make us cousins six times removed (is that right?) Our Flores line is Antonio Gil, Jose, Vital, Jose Policarpio, Thomas Walker, and my father, Len Benton Flores. Our line is traced in The Flores Book by James Padgett, who was the son of Katy Bell Flores, the daughter of William Flores who was a brother of Thomas Walker Flores, my grandfather. Our information is that Antonio Gil Cesar Flores was a Spanish Lieutenant, second in command and the ranking military officer with a party of settlers who sailed up the Mississippi and settled in what is now east Texas. Their leader was Gil Y Barbo. If you go to the courthouse in Nacadoches you'll see a plaque stating that the courthouse was built over both their graves. The Flores family is one of the oldest in the Texas area, and their second settlement in 1721 (long story) was proclaimed as the capital of the Texas region of Mexico until 1771 when the King pulled them back to San Antonio because of Apache and Comanche raids. Walter Prescott Webb, in his book The Great Plains writes about this era and our family.
