James PERLEY, G.C. HOLMAN, A.J. FLOOD, S. HANLEY and J.H. STERNS (the 'Citizen Exploring Committee'), we launched our boat at Woodbridge on the 5th at 9 o'clock, a.m., and set out for this place, where we arrived at 1 o'clock, making the trip in 3 and ? hours with ease. We found no difficulty whatever in making the passage, the average depth of water being 6 feet and a half the entire way. I took particular note of each and every obstruction, both in the river and on the banks, and made an estimate of what it would cost to remove them, and my figures, which amply sufficed to put the river in boating condition, exceed those of the Committee by $1000. The citizens of Woodbridge will meet in mass meeting this afternoon, to make arrangements to proceed at once to clear out the channel and construct [section missing] ..."
