I believe I composed a somewhat extensive response to your query, but have lost it. However, I have incorporated your notes into a preliminary work on Thomas Flewelling of Westfield Parish. I strongly feel that you are on the right track, and that Abel was the s/o John D. Flewelling; and that John was the s/o Thomas of Westfield. This conclusion is based primarily on a process of elimination, and needs confirmation; especially as there were Flewellings on Grand Manan Island, and in the Calais, ME and Charlotte Co. areas who were definitely from other branches of the family. In particular, Abel Flewwelling, the Loyalist, had descendants in Calais through his daughters; but none, apparently, through his sons. The conclusion is that none of Abel Flewwelling's descendants, by the name Flewelling/Flewwelling, would be found in Calais; in spite of the similarity of names; therefore we must be looking at the family of Abel's brother, John Flewelling, Jr.; therefore at John's son, Thomas Flewelling of Westfield. The multiple uses of the names, Thomas, John and Abel creates some confusion, but the following on the family of the son of John and Deborah (Denton) Flewelling may help.
Thomas
439. THOMAS FLEWWELLING OF WESTFIELD PARISH
ca. 1771 - 1860
Thomas Flewwelling, b. ca. 1771, d. 1860, m. Mary_____. In addition to buying Morris’ Lot 18 in 1794, Thomas and Mary Flewelling bought Lot 19 in Westfield Parish, Kings Co., NB from Stephen Thomas 24FEB1815, and they together sold it again 16NOV1818. Thomas sold Lot 23 (presumably that lot granted to his father in 1786) to John Hanning. (Apparently this transaction, according to Kevin Bond, was in a Kings Co. record book, Book K-1, p. 282.) A partial quotation from the transaction reads, “ . . . the property of Elisha Flewelling who has been absent from this province a number of years, sold by Thomas Flewelling and wife, Mary, both of Westfield Parish . . . July 23rd, 1812.” This suggests that Thomas and Mary were married by at least 1812, but probably after 1794.
It is probable that Thomas’ father, like his uncle, Abel Flewwelling, used two W’s; and this may be where the family of Abraham Jewell Flewwelling also derive the spelling. After Thomas, that spelling appears to become arbitrary, with one W predominating in later generations. Thus, the sons are given one W, and the daughters two W’s.
Their children are believed to be:
4391. MARTHA FLEWWELLING m. 21AUG1823 WILLIAM LOGAN (Kings County Marriage Register, Vol. 1: 1812-1844, entry 149, PANB microfilm F-75. Witnesses were Susan H. Wilmot and Sophia A. Wiggens. The minister was G. L. Wiggins.)
4392. NEHEMIAH FLEWELLING b. ca. 1804, m. SARAH SHARPE
4393. ANN FLEWWELLING m. 31DEC1824 CHARLES LOGAN (Kings County Marriage Register, Vol. 1: 1812-1844, entry 164, PANB microfilm F-75. Witnesses were Nehemiah Flewwelling and Robert Logan. Marriage performed by the Rev. G. L. Wiggins.)
4394. ELISHA FLEWELLING b. ca. 1810, d. Saint John, NB 6MAY1899 aet 90 years (Kevin Wentzell-Donovan Flewelling GenForum # 350 10OCT2001), bur. Lot 346 S.W. Church of England Graveyard, Saint John East 8MAY1899 (or this is his date-of-death.) Kevin Bond refers to him as a son of Thomas Flewelling, so, presumably, this is a son of Thomas, son of John and Deborah (Denton) Flewelling. He appears in the 1871 census of Kingston Parish, Kings Co., NB as age 60. He m. 1st Saint John, NB 11SEP1834 (both of Westfield Parish) PRUDENCE CATHERINE LASKEY; m. 2nd Saint John, NB 20OCT1854 (Elisha of Portland (Saint John) and Mary of Kingston Parish, Kings Co., NB) MARY JANE WHITTAKER ( b. ca. 1812, d. 1891 aet. 79 years (Kevin Wentzell-Donovan Flewelling GenForum # 352 10OCT2001))
4395. MARY FLEWWELLING m. 10NOV1830 JOSEPH LOGAN (Kings County Marriage Register, Vol. 1: 1812-1844, entry 272, PANB microfilm F-75. Witnesses were Elizabeth Wiggins and Margaret Ch[asnut].) A Joseph and Nancy Logan had a son, John (b. 11JAN1836), bpt. at Oak Point 1NOV1836. A Joseph Logan (b. ca. 1811) with his wife, Mary (b. ca. 1816) lived in Westfield Parish during the 1851 census, and had sons: Robert Logan b. ca. 1842 and William Logan b. ca. 1847.
In, New Brunswick Vital Statistics From Newspapers: 1829-1831, (Vital Statistics Committee, New Brunswick Genealogical Society, Daniel F. Johnson, chair, Fredericton, NB 1984;) in entry # 1039 on p. 56, is an abstract from the 13 November, 1830 issue of, The New Brunswick Courier, which gives:
m. [Westfield] Kings Co. 10th by Rev. G. L. Wiggins
The last two notations indicate that the notice appeared in the, New Brunswick Royal Gazetter, and another newspaper. In the case of Mary’s presumed sisters, and the witness to one of those sister’s wedding, it is only assumed that Ann, Martha and Nehemiah are children of Thomas and Mary Flewelling. In this case, having only one Thomas Flewelling from Westfield Parish at the time, the relationship is stated. That Mary has at least two older sisters, and that the other weddings were also performed in Westfield Parish by the Rev. G. L. Wiggins, strongly supports the concept that all were siblings, and that the two elder sisters were Ann and Hannah.
4396. JOHN D. FLEWELLING b. ca. 8FEB1812 Kings Co., NB, d. Princeton, ME 4AUG1899 aet. 87 years, 5 months 27days of cerebral apoplexy, m. RUTH E. CRAIG (b. ca. 1824.) In the 1850 census of Calais, ME. Suzanne P. Lisson includes John as a son of Thomas and Mary Flewelling, suggesting he was b. in Westfield Parish, referring to, Long Island Genealogies, web site. This had been a possibility I had considered, but still feel that good evidence is lacking. If, in fact, he was born in Westfield Parish, then I would feel more certain. I believe that the ultimate source of information on him was Maine Vital Records as gathered by Ann Flewelling, specifically a death record.
4397. HANNAH FLEWWELLING (Hannah and the following were all baptized APR1825 in the Anglican Church at Oak Point as children of Thomas and Mary Flewelling of Westfield Parish.)
4398. ESTHER FLEWWELLING
4399. CHARLES EDWARD FLEWWELLING, possibly the Edward Flewelling of Portland (Saint John, NB) who m. 9OCT1848 ANNE BROWN, also of Portland. (Saint John Co. Marriage Register, Book D., p. 142; a witness was Robert Logan.)
439J. DEBORAH FLEWWELLING
439K. CATHERINE FLEWWELLING b. ca. 1823, d. 3OCT1846, bur. Loyalist burial Ground, Saint John, Saint John Co., NB (Suzanne P. Lisson referring to Daniel F. Johnson.)
439L. CHARLOTTE FLEWELLING, possibly the Charlotte Flewelling who m. 4OCT1854 JOHN BERDOIN (Saint John Co. Marriage Register, Book E., p. 139; both of Portland in Saint John; although Suzanne Lisson has her m. 27FEB 1843 to JOHN WHELPLEY, referring to the Saint John County Marriage Registers.)
4391. MARTHA FLEWWELLING
Martha Flewelling m. 21AUG1823 William Logan (Kings County Marriage Register, Vol. 1: 1812-1844, entry 149, PANB microfilm F-75. Witnesses were Susan H. Wilmot and Sophia A. Wiggens. The minister was G. L. Wiggins.) Their children are believed to be:
43911. NEHEMIAH LOGAN bpt. Oak Point 5OCT1827, d. 23JAN1890 aet. 62 years (b. in Kings Co., NB), probably he who m. 1st CATHERINE(or ELEANOR, or both) BELL (b. Scotland?), and lived in Saint John; m. 2nd 1876 (PANB microfilm F-9108) 1876 CATHERINE OSBORNE (William H. Logan a witness.)
43912. WILLIAM BRAZIER HAWES LOGAN bpt. Oak Point 10NOV1830
43913. EDWARD LOGAN bpt. Oak Point 28MAY1839
43914. JOSEPH STONE LOGAN? prob. he who m. Saint John, Saint John Co., NB (Nehemiah Logan a witness) 1871 MATILDA STACKHOUSE. A John Stone, of Westfield Parish, m. a Sarah Logan, also of Westfield Parish, 5OCT1827. Presumably Sarah (Logan) Stone was Nehemiah Logan’s aunt. Also, Isaac Logan m. Ruthy Stone 16DEC1826 in Westfield Parish.
43915. EMMA LOGAN m. Saint John, Saint John Co., NB (Nehemiah Logan a witness) 1878 JOHN OSBORN

This had been a possibility I had considered, but still feel that good evidence is lacking. If, in fact, he was born in Westfield Parish, then I would feel more certain. Abel is included here as a son of John D. Flewelling largely on speculation based on time and location. Much of the information, supported by other sources, is derived from a posting by Janet Windhausen (Flewelling GenForum # 531, 6NOV2002.) Janet wrote:
Problem: the need to discover the parents of Abel Flewwelling (or Flewelling). He does not appear in the Canadian Census of 1871, nor in the US Census of 1870. He does not appear in the vital records of Saint John County of NB (his presumed site of birth) nor in the list of late birth registrations. His wedding record in Calais, Maine does not exist in the town and state archives; only the marriage intentions in August of 1875.
The following is what is known:
ABEL FLEWWELLING was born 1853-54 in Saint John,? New Brunswick, Canada, and died Bef. 1896 in Montana (?). He married ANNIE MILLER August 1875 in Calais, Maine, daughter of WILLIAM MILLER and ANN AUSTIN. She was born 1852 in Saint Andrews, Charlotte Co., NB, and died June 13, 1925 in Calais, Maine.
Abel was listed as an expressman. The family went to Montana to live since Abel suffered from a respiratory ailment and the climate was thought to be more suitable. We believe that he died there in the early-1890s. Annie then returned to Calais with her chlldren and appears in the Calais directory for 1896-97 and noted as a widow.
Children of ABEL FLEWWELLING and ANNIE MILLER are:
i. HERBERT FLEWWELLING, b. July 1877, Calais, Maine; d. 1929, Calais, Maine. Burial: March 7, 1929, Calais Cemetery, Calais, ME
ii. JAMES FLEWWELLING, b. August 1879, Calais, Maine; d. December 12, 1881, Calais, Maine. Burial: January 15, 1882, Calais Cemetery, Calais, ME

Generation No. 2
WALTER ABEL FLEWELLING was born November 25, 1881 in Calais, Maine, and died December 22, 1966 in Belmont, Mass.. He married (1) GRACE MCCULLOUGH September 10, 1907 in Calais, Maine11, daughter of WILLIAM MCCULLOUGH and LOUELLA MORSE. She was born October 29, 1886 in Calais, Maine, and died February 2, 1920 in Philadelphia, PA. He married (2) MARION PEERS December 31, 1925 in Brighton, Mass., daughter of JOHN PEERS and JANE SCANNELL. She was born June 19, 1897 in Brighton, Mass., and died 1971 in Cambridge, Mass.
There was another Flewelling born in Calais about 1848 by the name of Charles E who may have been a cousin or brother to Abel. He died in Princeton, Maine on 21 March 1899. His father, John D Flewelling, was born in Kingston, NB about 1812 and he died 4 August 1899. He was born in Saint John. Charles mother was Ruth E. Gray from Saint Andrews, NB. These data from State of Maine Vital Records, 1892-1930.
Notes for GRACE MCCULLOUGH:
Died in the flu epidemic of 1920 as did her son, William. They died in Philadelphia and were buried in Calais Cemetery, Calais, Maine in the site where Frank MClean, d. 1959, is also buried. A single gravestone marks all three graves. Burial: February 10, 1920, Calais, Maine
Marriage Notes for WALTER FLEWELLING and GRACE MCCULLOUGH:

(Abel is given as a farm labourer and Anne as a housekeeper or ‘keeping house’. TAM.)
The first concept which springs to mind is that Abel is descended from Abel Flewwelling, the Loyalist. However, the name, Abel, in the Flewelling family ultimately derives from Abel Flewwelling’s maternal grandfather, Abel “Blue” Smith; and was used by other descendants. For example, a son of John and Deborah (Denton) Flewelling (Abel’s brother and sister-in-law) is known by Deborah’s will to have also been Abel; although what became of him is unknown. The name, Abel, was also used in the family of Nehemiah Flewelling; and Nehemiah is believed to have been Elisha’s brother. The name is found at least once in the family of the Loyalist, Thomas Flewelling of Oak Point, and this is one of the number of small hints that suggest that Thomas was a brother of Abel Flewwelling and John Flewelling, Jr. Perhaps noting the possibility of a connection to the Loyalist, Abel Flewwelling, Janet Windhausen also uses two ‘w’s; but as far as I can tell, this part of the family used only one. Although it is known that some descendants of John and Deborah (Denton) Flewelling, most notably Abraham Jewell Flewwelling, did use two ‘w’s; and it seems that early generations of John and Deborah’s family used both spellings interchangeably.
It is also worth noting that descendants of Abel Flewwelling are early found in the area of Calais, ME; but there is no indication that any of his sons or grandsons with the name, Flewwelling, lived there or thereabouts. Of Abel Flewwelling’s three sons, one lived in Kings Co., NB, one in York Co., NB and one in New York State, near New York City.
In general, the idea that Abel Flewelling of Calais, ME was connected to the family of John and Deborah (Denton) Flewelling seems the most practical. In turn, this points to John D. Flewelling who was very likely a son of Thomas Flewelling, s/o John and Deborah. These conclusions are reached first, by a consideration of times and places, and second, by a process of elimination that indicates it is unlikely that the line-of-descent runs from Thomas Flewelling of Oak Point, Abel Flewwelling, Joseph Flewelling of Saint John and Francis Flewelling. This leaves the family of John Flewelling, Jr., again bringing us to the Westfield Parish Flewellings and to John D. Flewelling.
