I was able to find out a bit more about William and his family. The key was searching for the spelling 'Flewellen'. One of the difficulties with Flewelling is the varieties of spelling. You probably know most of this, but it may be useful. I am convinced, at this point, that William was Robert's son, and that Robert, as discussed before, was Ezekiel's son; and Ezekiel (mentioned in his father's will) was the son of Robert and Maplet Flewelling.

R317. WILLIAM FLEWELLING
William Flewelling b. Ohio? ca. 1812, m. Elizabeth _____ (b. Indiana ca. 1817) is another son of Robert Flewelling of Indiana suggested by Allen D. Flewelling, “William, son of Robert and Nancy is in Marshall Co, Indiana in 1840; in Franklin Co, Indiana in 1850 and in Lake Co, Illinois in 1870.” Was also m. Franklin Co., Indiana 26MAY1836.
An interesting feature is the 1834, Blooming Grove Township Taxpayers, at:

Page 1 of the original is missing, so my conclusion may be incorrect, but while William Flewelling is listed (he would have been in his early 20’s), Robert is not. This may suggest that William went to Indiana first, and persuaded his father to follow.

My great-great-grandfather was John Flewellen of Indiana b 1837, Civil War Veteran, d. 1883 in Valparaiso, IN. Through some patchwork research I have much confidence that his father William b 1812 in NY has a direct connection to Robert and Maplet.
suggesting that William had at least one son.
A project to index the 1850 census of Franklin Co. is in process at:
http://www.geocities.com/franklincocensus/http://www.geocities.com/franklincocensus/
which will also link the names to the census page. The links (as of AUG2003) don’t work, but there are also links to transcriptions of the pages. At page 174B:

is Bloomingrove Twp. Franklin Co., Indiana, enumerated 9AUG1850. Here are Robert ‘Fluellen’ age 80 years. He is a farmer and was b. in New York State. His wife, Nancy, is age 70, and also b. NY. With them is ‘Jennet’, age 25, b. NY; presumably their daughter. This gives rise to a difficulty as, next door, is William Fluellen, and his birthplace is given as ‘Oo’, presumably Ohio; while with William is Ezra (age 40, blind, and presumably William’s brother) also b. NY. Either the birthplace for William is incorrect, or Robert, about 1812, was briefly in Ohio, and had returned to NY before 1820. Isaac, William’s son, in 1880, gives his father’s birthplace as NY, which is more likely correct.
William was age 38 in 1850, and a farmer. His wife, Elizabeth, b. Indiana, was age 33. In addition to William’s brother, Ezra, other members of the household were: John (13), Sarah (13), Joseph (10), Robert (8), Isaac (6) and Susan (5).
William died before 1880 as, in 1880, in Pleasant, Porter Co., Indiana, his son, Isaac had with him his mother, Elizabeth, a widow, b. Ohio ca. 1817, parents b. Pennsylvania.
Their children were:
R3171. JOHN FLEWELLEN (twin?) b. Blooming (Bloomingrove? or Blooming Grove?) Twp., Franklin Co., Indiana ca. 1837, d. Valparaiso, Indiana 1883, m. MINNIE _____ (b. Illinois ca. 1859)
R3172. SARAH JANE FLEWELLEN b. Indiana ca. 1837. The IGI gives the d/o William and Elizabeth as Sarah Jane Flewellen; presumably from another census return, and gives her birth as Blooming Twp., Franklin Co., Indiana. A Sarah Jane Flewellen m. Crown Point, Lake Co., Indiana 1NOV1857 Hiram Walton (b. 13JUN1836, d. in a Civil War camp, possibly in Cook Co., Illinois, 18FEB1862.)
They had a son, Joseph Anderson Walton b. 24JUL1858, d. 1929, m. Wheeler, Porter Co., Indiana 20JAN1887 Ella May Elliot (b. Cook Co., Illinois ca. 1865, d. Porter Co., Indiana 1933.)
It is by no means certain this was the same Sarah, but the timing and location are intriguing.
Ella May Elliot might be the Ella Elliot b. Illinois ca. 1864, d/o of William and Mary Elliot, in the 1880 census of Portage, Porter Co., Indiana. The IGI tends to confirm this, giving her parents as William E. and Mary Ellen (Quinn) Elliott.
A Joseph Walton b. Indiana ca. 1858 was working for George W. and Nancy A. King in Greenfield, Orange Co., Indiana in 1880. More likely, however, was ‘Josept’ Walton, in Union, Porter Co., IN in 1880, working on the farm of Edward D. Curtis. This is where Sarah Flewellen’s brother, John, lived in 1880. Another Walton in Union in 1880 was Lewis Walton b. Indiana ca. 1860 working for John J. Harris.
R3173. JOSEPH FLEWELLEN b. Indiana ca. 1840
R3174. ROBERT FLEWELLEN b. Indiana ca. 1842
R3175. ISAAC FLEWELLEN b. Indiana ca. 1844, m. ELIZA _____ (b. Indiana ca. 1849)
R3176. SUSAN FLEWELLEN b. Indiana ca. 1845
R3175. ISAAC FLEWELLEN
Isaac Flewellen b. Indiana ca. 1844, m. Eliza _____ (b. Indiana ca. 1849.)
In 1880, in Pleasant, Porter Co., Indiana, Isaac was age 36, b. Indiana, a farmer, father b. NY (as opposed to Ohio as above), mother b. Ohio. Eliza, also b. Indiana, was age 31, father b. Kentucky, mother b. Indiana. With them were: ‘Orra’ M. (daughter, 10); and Isaac’s mother, Elizabeth, b. Ohio ca. 1817, parents b. Pennsylvania.
At least one daughter was:
R31751. ORRA M. FLEWELLEN b. Indiana ca. 1870
R3171. JOHN FLEWELLEN
John Flewellen b. Blooming Twp., Franklin Co., Indiana ca. 1837, d. Valparaiso, Indiana 1883, m. Minnie _____ (b. Illinois ca. 1859.)
John’s place of birth is probably derived from the 1850 census, as the IGI, which gives that place, also identifies him as the son of William and Elizabeth ‘Flewellin’, and gives his date-of-birth as ca. 1837.
John and Minnie ’Fluellin’ are in the 1881 census of Union, Porter Co., Indiana in 1881. John is a farmer, and his father was b. NY, but his mother was b. Ohio. Minnie’s parents were b. Pennsylvania.
Their children were:
R31711. IDA FLEWELLEN b. Indiana ca. 1867
R31712. FRED S. FLEWELLEN b. Indiana ca. 1878
