Thomas:

Thank you for your message. FYI, I am researching this family for a Flewelling friend who lives here in Dallas, Texas.

Indeed the Milton Frederick Flewelling, Jr. identified in the Escambia County cemetery is the son of the subject. Don't know whether Barbara was his wife.

James Letteney Flewelling (Jr.), who died 8/20/1987 in Dallas, is the grandson of the subject and the father of Kathy Flewelling Thompson, my friend. James was born in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1914.

That Milton Frederick Flewelling, Sr. was b. 5/6/1852 in New Brunswick is supported by family history, family oral tradition, and the 1900 census (i.e., b. in "Canada" in 5/1852). His naturalization year (1884) also is contained in this 1900 census record. Milton became certified as a ship's captain in St. John's N.B.in 4/24/1884, as evidenced by his original certificate, which Kathy (above) has hanging in her den. In 1900, the family was in Boston (1900 census), and soon thereafter, moved to Lynn, Massachusetts, where he and his wife died.

According to Kathy, family tradition (such as it is) makes no mention of either Maine or Ontario.

On a side note, do you happen to be from NB? My wife and I have spent several wonderful vacations in that part of the world--spent a couple of weeks touring NB, NS, and PEI (not enough time). Then another couple of weeks in Newfoundland and Labrador on a separate trip.

Never having researched Canadian ancestors, do I understand well that census records/indexes are difficult/unavailable?

Again, thank you for your response. Perhaps we can unravel this mystery of Milton's ancestory, as you obviously have knowledge of this family.

Best regards,

Irving
