The speculation that the Llewellyns/Flewellings etc. were descended from the Welsh Princes of that name is very small. The descendants of those princes were pretty systematically killed off. What the name means is that an ancestor had the given name, Llewellyn. He may have been a sheepherder, farmer, fisherman, tinsmith, etc. For example, Price comes from ap Rhys, son of Rhys; Powell comes from ap Hwyll; Pritchard comes from ap Richard; Pugh from ap Hugh. Fortunately, ap Llewellyn did not become Plewellyn; but the principle is the same. Jones is from ap John, for example. To say that a Llewellyn is descended from the princely Llewellyns is the same as saying that George Washington Irving must have been descended from George Washington, or that John Wesley Hardin was descended from John Wesley.
