Fleece Family Genealogy Forum
Hello, I have been researching the Fleece line because one of my ancestors Nancy ? Smith after the death of her husband ? Smith married a Enoch Fleece in Lawrence County, Ohio in abt. 1825, I think since I am doing this by memory right now. My great great great grandmother Cynthia Ann Smith was the daughter of Nancy and ? Smith. I have found an article on line in the Historical Collection of Ohio by Henry Howe, Vo. 11, 1888 in the Lawrence County section, Page 56 concerning a court case which involved an unknown person versus Enoch H. Fleece in 1828 which involved from what I can make of it the complaint by the plaintiff because of the unsoundness of the horse that was sold to him I believe by the defendant Mr. Fleece. To make a long story short here, the defendant claimed that the horse was not unsound or diseased or in unsound health, but that the drooping appearance arose from his being "bewitched" which he did not call unsound and that as soon as they could get witches out of the horse the horse would then be as well as ever. It goes on the to the burning of a cow for being "bewitched" also. But never did say what happened to the horse.
Has anyone in the Fleece family ever heard of this.
