Hiram H. Markley is the brother of Sarah "Aunt Sadie" Markley Fleck. He is also brother to my Great grandfather Christopher Markley. The Markley's were in the mercantile business in Altoona, PA and all moved to Roanoke, VA. They became builders, bankers, college owners and built a lot of the infrastructure for the city of Roanoke, bridges, water works (Cristal Springs lake and pumping station), and a number of the buildings. Hirams' brother Samuel B Markley was a very early pilot and flew a bi-plane. I know very little about "Uncle Hiram" or "Aunt Sadie". I believe they owned an apartment building on Commerce Street which is today 2nd Street in Roanoke. I think one census list this maybe 1830) I do remember a apartment building once owned by the family on 2nd Street near the Christopher Markley home (1112 Second Street) burning and being torn down when I visited as a child one summer in the late 1960's or early 70's. I know the family also owned Orange Groves in Florida and use to pack up everything including their autos and ship by train down there for the winter. I once saw pictures of them there in the late 1800's in full Victorian dress fishing and enjoying the warmer winters.
