Here is a letter found in a collection of Hawkins papers in the MO Archives. Albert refers to Grandfather, Uncle and cousins in this wonderful bit of history. Can you help me determine HOW Albert is related to his "cousin" Alman Gwinn Hawkins. Transcribed to reproduce the spelling, spacing, and language in the letter. xxxx represents undeciphered words. Letter written by Albert Flatt in VanZant CO, Texas and found in the Hawkins Collection in the Missouri state archives State of texas vanzant co this the 13 th of May the year 18 and 57 Dear cosons and friends it is threw the mercy of god that I have taken my pen in hand to right you a few lines to let you no we aire all well with the except in of bad colds and I hope if this ill composed lines come to hand tha will find you all well and doing well i can in farm you that I recievd youre kind leter which gave us grate satis faction to here from you all one time more times in texas is tolerable hard at this time and money is tolerable skarce and health is good you stated in youre leter you want to no what for winter we had here last winter i can in farm you that we had no winter here last winter at tall all the winter we had here a tall we had it this spring the winter was vary favorable un till the first of April it be gin to turn cool and that knight of April there come a frost and hit ever thing the leavs on the timber was a bout half growing and the corn was big enuf to plow and the wheat was beginning to head and on the 2nd of April the come a sno whitch was 5 inches deep whitch was the first sno i saw last wonter and the people thought that texas a in tirely ruinded State for the timber looks like it was in tirley ruined but thanks be to God it has all come too a gain and the corn looks well and the people says tha will make beter crop of wheat than they wold if maid if said frost had not if come [page 2] you want to no what for wheat conty this was the portion of the county to whitch i live in is not good for wheat but the tell me north of us the raise as good wheat as ever was raise whitch is a bout 75 milled but i dont no wither the do or not but i no one thing a bout it i no the wagons is a running daly by droves a halling of ther flower and as far the water that is only tolerable good and as for the timber and pararie it is tolerable well deried an the land produces tolerable well but not as well as your country but i have raise as good corn here as i ever saw ever thing apears to grow well here i never fed mi cattle here last winter not one peck of corn and the came oute in the spring in beter xxxx than yourne wold there with all of feed you cold if give them and i had a bout 200 bushels of corn Aulman [Alman Guinn Hawkins] i will tell you mi situation when i landed in texas i did not have one dime in cash and i had one mare and one old wagon and mi mare died and i sale the wagon for 30 bushels of corn and now i have got 21 head of cattle and 2 head of horses and 8 head of sheep and 100 and 28 head of hogs and a smoke house full of bacon and plenty of corn and a half of a sac of coffey a siting under the bed corn was a selling at fore bits be fore the frost but since the frost it is raise to one dolar and flowerwas a selling at 4 dolar and it is raise to 6 and bacon 412 (?) and coffey 6 pounds to the dolar [page 3] cowes and a calf is a selling from 18 to 20 dolar and xxx is from 40 to 75 dolar for yoke horses is from 50 to 100 and 50 dolars i want you to tell old grandfather Jefison (is this John Jefferson Hawkins, s/o Joseph and Elizabeth McCrary Hawkins? ) i want him to right to me and tell old uncle henry biddics i want him to right to me and would you right Direct your leters to caught man co perarie ville po [probably Kaufman CO, which is between Dallas CO and VanZant CO.
