Margaret (Maggie) E Flanary Mystery
Posted by: J Neil Rivers (ID *****7916) Date: July 05, 2006 at 09:29:36

I recently discovered a tombstone under a corn crib on my propery on Wallens Creek in Lee County Virginia. The head stone and footstone are in excellent condition having been covered all these years. The inscription reads: Maggie E Wife of H.L. Slemp Born Mar 13, 1874 died Oct 23, 1901 gone but not forgotten.

I subsequently found out that this is Maggie E Flanary who married Hugh Letcher Slemp. She was the youngest daughter (of 8 children) of James Monroe Flanary (b Jul 4, 1834 and d Feb 8, 1915) and Nevesta Overton Slemp (b Dec 11, 1834 in Lee County Virginia and d Jun 2, 1914).

The mystery is why she would be buried on the family farm and a corn crib built over the grave. Some records show she was buried in the Flanary Cemetery on Wallens creek which is about 1/4 mile from where the tombstone/footstone were found.
