I too would be more interested in seeing proof of the connection between the Virginia Flakes and Samuel in N. Carolina, but the family tradition that Samuel Flake was either the original immigrant or Scotch-Irish doesn't convince me.

Looking at surname distributions, there are absolutely no Flakes in Scotland, and I only found one in Ireland, born about 1800 or so. On the other hand, there is a huge cluster of Flakes in the Hampshire-Isle of Wight area of England. It would make more sense to think the Flakes came from an area which is still populated by the same surname than to think that they were the last by that name to desert Scotland. Those distributions hold up going back to the 1881 UK census and probably much further.

It also seems logical that people coming from that area named their county Isle of Wight, in Virginia, after their home.

My mother's cousin, who recently died aged 103 and also a Flake descendant, always said that the family was barking up the wrong tree regarding Samuel's origins.

Diane
