I'm especially interested in the following Martins: James E. and his wife, Mary Miller Martin; Eugenia O., Sarah, Louisa, Willam and John Elijah. I am also interested in a John H. and a John R. Martin.
I have found claims that Eugenia O. and Sarah were daughters of James E. and an Ellen Duncan, which is (unless all my sources are wrong), completely false, however, I can't prove them wrong without knowing just who this Ellen Duncan was. I believe that she was the same Ellen Duncan listed as daughter of Thomas Duncan and Mary in the 1850 Decatur Co., GA Census and, if so, she'd have been much too young to have been the mother of either Eugenia or Sarah who were both older than she was. I am sure that James E. had a daughter named Sarah. I think he had a daughter named Eugenia O. but Eugenia could have been a grandaughter or a niece. She was not on the 1850 census but was on the 1860 census in the household of James E. and Mary and her age there was listed as 11. James E. moved his family to Washington Co. late in the year of 1865. I did not find James E. listed in the 1870 Washington Co. census so assume he died prior to that. I found a Mary Martin, who could possibly have been his widow in the 1870 census index but will need to go back to the archives and check the actual census to see if she were the right Mary. John Elijah was in the 1870 WA. Co. census but as John A. Martin. I am sure it was my g-grandfather John Elijah as his age, occupation of "Medical Doctor," wife Martha J. and child, Willie and all their ages match perfectly. John Elijah moved back to Decatur County GA before the 1880 census was taken and died shortly afterward.
Reports I've seen show both Eugenia and Sarah as having married Gainers and both of them and James E. are buried in the Gainer Cemetery at Econfina Creek.
In online documents, this Ellen Duncan has been credited with being the wife of three different Martin men (all at the same time) and with being the daughter of two different Duncan men (one from Decatur Co who was born in 1805 and another from Jackson Co, FL who was born much later.
If anyone knows of these or any other Martin's in Washington Co. from 1865 through 1880, I'd love to hear from you.
