Don't know if I can help you or if there is any connection to your Knighton, but I am trying to find documentation of a family story concerning my husband's Grandmother Pearl Burden Jackson. She was the daughter of a woman named Sallie (do not know her maiden name yet) who was also a Seminole Indian. I will do a few searches using Sallie Knighton and see if there are any hits...it's a long shot but worth a try.
There was a Burden listed as a Seminole Freedman in the 1890 final roles.Sallie and Pearl both had a dislike for the Creek tribe although they were Creek themselves...said they were dirty turncoat child stealers.Sallie lived to be a 100 years old and always said her mother was stolen from Osceola by the whites. Her mother was either the daughter of a sister or the daughter of Osceola...waiting on family records to clarify which and also verify her name. She had two names--a white name and an Indian name....family has a picture of a Seminole woman with a black man taken the day they were released from captivity.Sallie said her mother said the man was not a blood relation but the black part of the Creek, Cherokee, Chickasaw and Seminole Indian heritage was often denied because of land right issues. Also, the Creeks had a bad habit of trying to sell the Black mixed Seminoles as slaves...raids and such. By the way, I saw some claims that one of Osceola's sisters was also called Polly but do not know if that is true. You might try Scotland.I have seen some listings of Osceola's white name as John William 'Billie' Powell, Jr.His Dad was supposed to have been born in Scotland.
