Hi - Here is some information for you, taken from Ancestry.com.(This subscription product is almost a necessity for doing serious contemporary genealogical research in the U.S.)
You have at least some of the information, but possibly not all.
The Oregon Death Index shows:
ALLEN, Robert W. - died 17 Mar 1954 in Multnomah County - (Portland area) - Certificate 3194
ALLEN, Dora H. - died 25 Apr 1957 in Multnomah County - (Portland area) - Certificate 4692
I think that I would try to:
1. Get copies of the death certificates. They should identify the informants (very likely children of the deceased), the funeral homes handling the arrangements, and the burial locations.
These are available from:
http://www.allvitalrecords.com/index.asp?state=ORhttp://www.allvitalrecords.com/index.asp?state=OR
2. Get copies of the obituaries. They should identify the surviving family members by relationship, name, and location, and confirm the funeral and burial information.
A good source is "Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness", a group of volunteers who can help with local research for people at a distance.
You can contact a volunteer from that area at this site:
http://www.raogk.org/oregon3.htmhttp://www.raogk.org/oregon3.htm
With these two types of documents, you should have a good idea of where the living children were in 1954 and 1957, and might be able to concentrate your efforts in certain states.
The World War I Draft Registration for Lewis County, Washington, shows what appears to be one of the sons (Carl Henry ALLEN, born 16 Jun 1889 in Oakland, California).Much personal information is included on his registration card. This can be viewed and printed at Ancestry.com.
And the Federal Censuses.Husband, wife, and various children appear in the last four censuses available:
1930 - Oregon - Multnomah County - City of Portland
1920 - Washington - Lewis County - Hanaford Precinct
1910 - Washington - Lewis County - Hanaford Precinct
1900 - California - Alameda County - Murray Township
This last one (1900) indicates that Robert and Dora had been married two years, and that she had had only one child, still living.Other children were in the household: could Robert have been married to someone before Dora?
Unless there were some evidence to the contrary, I would be surprised to find someone from the Northwest (California, Oregon, Washington) retiring to Florida. It happens occasionally, of course, but not often.
I hope that this helps.
Good luck!
