I am in search of any and all information on James E. Best Born b. 1825 possibly Henry County, Alabama, although not verified. He married Abbegail Unkown, and they had two sons Morgan b. 1849 or 1853.and George b. 1855. Unsure of what caused Abbegail's death or where she may be buried. James and Abbegail Best appear first in Henry County Alabama Census and land records. James E. Best then married Sarah Brown Best in 1858 Henry County Alabama. James and Sarah Best migrated from there to Lafayette County Fla. Both sons Morgan and George appear in the Lafayette County census of 1870,although,they too, seem to disappear. Update*I now have Morgan's death information. They did own land in several Alabama Counties, including Henry County. They later acquired land in Florida as well. They are listed on the 1860 , 1870, 1880 and 1885 census for Lafayette County, Fl. By 1900 neither James nor Sarah Brown Best appears on any census. James E. Best was listed as a physician by 1870. There are no traces of Dr. and Mrs. J. E. Best in any records that I can locate. I have searched medical colleges, and mortality and death indexes. Can find no documentation of either Sarah Brown Best b. 1835 Alabama nor James E. Best born 1825, possibly Alabama. They resided in Alabama and Florida. James Best listed himself as born in Kentucky, but have no way to connect him to that information. On the 1885 census, they were listed as age 50 Sarah and age 60 James. I find it most unusual to find absolutely no reference to either Dr. James E Best nor Sarah Best after 1885. I did check on the epidemic of 1888 yellow fever and did not find them listed. The area of Lafayette County Fla is adjacent to Suwannee County, Madison County, Dixie County, and others. No databases show any information. Travel was difficult at this time and it often took an hour and a half to travel as few as 7- 10 miles. Suwannee County Fl Hospital was not yet built and I cannot locate him in Live Oak or any surrounding areas. It has been suggested the reference Dr was a title of respect rather than a physician as listed on 1885 census. I did locate James Best as having served in the civil war in the Calvary, but no pension was ever drawn that I can locate. James Best is buried in Midway Cemetery, Live Oak Fl.His death date was either 1882 or 1893 as I have conflicting dates and am unable at this time to check myself. Sarah Brown Best went on to marry someone else...surname and dates unknown. This is most important to me James Best is a direct ancestor of mine. Any information will be kept confidential if asked.
