Dr. John L. Finlayson, a native of Marianna, was indeed assassinated on the evening of Feb. 26, 1869 while walking in the company of Freedmen's Bureau (and later Congressman) William J. Purman. Some considered Purman to be the actual target and Finlayson an inadvertant victim. Finlayson, however, was close friends with Purman (who would later marry Finlayson's sister) and Finlayson empathized with the plight of the freedmen and the goals of the Bureau. In the summer of 1869, a Jackson County freedman recruited two African American soldiers stationed at the Chattahoochee arsenal to capture or kill the suspected assassin of Finlayson, a man named Bond, at a house near the Chattahoochee on the Jackson Co. side of the river. This plan completely backfired and resulted in the death of two of the plotters. I have collected extensive information about these subjects.
