In 1858, after a trip to Eucheeanna to buy supplies and sell a parcel of land, Samuel McQuagge was murdered at the home of Mrs. Nancy Sutley, where he had stopped for water about 10 miles from Eucheeanna, by his traveling companion and neighbor in southwestern Holmes County, John Ammons. Ammons was tried for the crime in Jackson County and again in Calhoun County, Florida (2nd trial). Ammons, age 23, pleaded self defense, but admitted to Mrs. Sutley "immediately afterwards that he had killed him by striking him with a gun, which was broken in the process, and with his knife."
I have not been able to find out where Samuel was buried or what happened to his family.
