Hawk,
I would say that if there were any adoption records they would have been done at a lawyer's office. Quite a few, especially between family members,were never given offical blessing. The long shot would be his SSN application. He most likely put down Edwin/Eliza though.The other long shot would be his death certificate. But, that is only as good as the informant. You do have a very good question, Would the papers have carried a birth announcement? You never know. It is a good avenue to look at.
