There were a number of "John McMillans" and I susepct they were all "Florida John" to the people back home in North Carolina. John McMillan, son of Archibald McMillan and Cathrine McArther, married Mary Gilchist McPhaul on October 6, 1827, in Robeson County, N.C. She was his first cousin (once removed), as John's aunt, Effie McMillan, was Mary's grandmother. Mary's brother, Neal McPhaul, also moved to the Gadsden County/Liberty County area, as did several of her Gilchrist cousins. By one report, her sister Effie was married to a Florida Johnson (my family), but I've struggled in vain to make the connection. John and Mary lived in the vicinity of Randal Johnson, who migrated to Gadsden County in 1822 from the Robeson County area by way of Tattnall County, Georgia. John McMillan died December 29, 1866 in Gadsden County. Mary died after 1887. They had a number of children.
I have seen the same reference as you to Catherine, wife of "Florida John", but do not believe this is the same "Florida John", since an older John McMillan, with a wife named Catherine, also lived in the area. It's possible that this older John was the younger John's uncle, as the older John has a brother back in North Carolina named Archibald. However, I have no confirmation on that. The McMillans, Gilchrists, and McPhauls are very "interrelated" and quite difficult to sort out.
