James McGill Hunter 1819-1859

James McGill Hunter, a prosperous farmer and fervent Mason, died in Jackson County, Florida in 1859 leaving 5 children and widow Margaret Stuart Pope b. 1831. They were married in 1850.

I believe James owned land in Gadsden County; I am trying to identify his parents. Slave schedules show that Margaret his widow inherited about twenty slaves.

Reportedly, a kinsman found in the early 1960s that James' place of burial was on private land in Marianna, and that the elaborate Masonic headstone had been badly damaged.

My direct line is through Margaret's brother William Samuel Pope 1824-1904 m. Mary Rowe, but James and Margaret are of interest, too. Margaret's and William's father, William Stuart (I) Pope 1789-1837 is the namesake of the Pope Cemetery near Sneads in Jackson County and during his lifetime he also owned lands in Gadsden County. Thanks!

Geoffrey Pope
