The mental institution in DeSoto County has been closed. Here is part of a newspaper article: State's closing of G. Pierce Wood hospital now ahead of schedule Tuesday, January 29, 2002 By LIZ FREEMAN, epfreeman@naplesnews.com State officials will be closing the region's mental hospital Feb. 28, about one month ahead of schedule, saying the phased-in closing over the past year has been going smoothly. The 382-bed G. Pierce Wood Memorial Hospital in Arcadia, which has served the severely mentally ill in 18 counties from St. Petersburg south to Naples, was originally targeted to close April 1. Twenty-six patients remained in the hospital as of Monday, and they are expected to be discharged or transferred to new treatment programs by Feb. 8. Twenty patients, including two from Lee County, will be transferred to other state mental hospitals, and the six other patients will be sent to nursing homes or assisted living facilities. Hope this helps. Brenda Jones Riverview, Florida Notify Administrator about this message?
