Although the FitzWilliams and McCullys have a relationship that goes back to Ireland, my research has focused on this country because my cousins and I are trying to prove my three-great grandfather, John McCullough (1809-1863), is a son of Charles McCully (d.c.1821). Charles is a brother-in-law of your William FitzWilliam.
Unfortunately, Charles did not leave a will and we have yet to find a document that lists his children. We think have been able to determine the names of most of his children through circumstantial evidence and/or secondary sources: William, Francis, Charles, James, Thomas Samuel, Jane and Maria.
Analyzing the censuses, we think there is one male child for whom we have not found a name. That is the one we believe is our John.
From the FitzWilliam perspective, the most interesting thing is the fact that William FitzWilliam and the McCullys moved from place to place at or about the same time.
In 1790, William FitzWilliam and Frances McCully (father-in-law of William) were living in Chester County, Penn. Although they were in different townships, the townships border on each other.
In 1800, Frances McCully and his son Charles were in Mercer County, Penn. I do not know where William FitzWilliam was that year.
In 1810, Charles McCully and William FitzWilliam are listed one after the other on page 925 of the Mercer County, Penn. census. Frances McCully is at the top of the next page.
In 1820, Charles McCully and William FitzWilliam are on page 289 of the Paxton Township, Ross County, Ohio, census.
Charles probably died in 1821 and William in 1828.
Charles probably moved to Ross County in 1818 as that is when he sold his property in Mercer County.
You can find the children of Frances McCully in my previous message on this thread; however, the key sibling around which the family seems to have revolved is Nancy McCully LeMoyne, wife of Dr. Francis J. LeMoyne of Washington County, Penn. When deaths occurred, her siblings, nieces and nephews seem to have gravitated to her household. For example, some of Charles' sons appear to have had Dr. LeMoyne named as their guardian in the 1820s. And my family's tradition is that John was also taken into the LeMoyne household, although we have not yet found any evidence to support this tradition.
