Fitzsimmons/Simmons/Fitzsimons/Simons

I got a letter in late January, 1997 from Mary B. Simons, P.O. Box
6373, Ft Worth, Texas, 76115-0373.

Mary said her husband's father was the son of Gabriel A.
Fitzsimmons. She did not know the family name was
Fitzsimmons, because her husband was named Simons.

This family came from Perry County, Illinois to Arkansas, then to Texas and
Oklahoma. The earliest of the family may have been Charles
Fitzsimmons, perhaps born about 1820, perhaps in Pennsylvania.
Other connections were in California before 1850.

I wrote back and said I had no information, but said that the
baseball player, Curt Simmons, was originally named Curtis
Fitzsimmons. I also wrote her that her husband's family name may
have been changed because of anti-Catholic or anti-Irish feeling.
