My understanding is that "Fitz" means "son of", so that's why there are Fitzhugh, Fitzpatrick, Fitzgerald. Can't figure out why there are Fitzsimmons? Fitzsimons is only slightly logical--there shouldn't be an "s" on the end. Son of Simon. Fitzsimons. Believe me, Fitzsimons is an aggravation--everyone calls me Fitzsimmons.
