That's a popular and dare I say tiresome misconception. It merely means "son of". However I understand that the name Fitroy was a surname given by royalty for the illegitimate children of indiscretions with their mistresses. i.e. "Fitz Roi" . So there's a grain of truth to it - but just with the Fitzroy surname. That's what probably gave rise to the all embracing misconception.

As an aside, how long has "marriage" actually been practised? Perhaps the Fitz family names precede it anyway
