Hi
I am not by any means an expert on this Thomas Fitzsimons but I would note as you may already know that there was a very famous Thomas Fitzsimmons in Philadelphia, an Irish immigrant born in1741 who went on to make a name for himself in politics. I believe that he was Catholic.
My own Fitzsimmons connections is with a Patrick Fitzsimmons who appears in Huntingdon, Pa (Cumberland Valley) in about 1790, and may have previously also been in Maryland. My guess is that my Patrick was a Protestant, but I am not sure. Still I wonder if there is a connection.
