I'm still at it...trying to link my 2g Grandfather Henry to his parents. I have found a little more info than the last time we 'talked.' He is listed incorrectly on the 1880 Hot Spring, Modoc County census as HENNY: FITZ HUGH. And I finally made it back to the LDS center and printed the 1900 census. He states that his father was born Virginia and mother of North Carolina, born Ireland. I was connecting him to Robert and Elizabeth Redman/Redmond, as she is of Iredell, North Carolina and he was born Virginia. Maybe, maybe not.
My father and I visited his grave over Memorial Weekend and I had a 'talking to him!' His birthdate is listed as July 22, 1822, death Sep 15, 1906 and is buried next to his second wife, Martha Anne Maiden/Mayden, in the Masonic portion of the Alturas, Modoc, Calif. cemetery.
We also were able to locate their homestead on Canyon Creek near Alturas. Fitzhugh creek runs through it, spills into Canyon Creek and empties into the Pitt River. It is just a beautiful site. The original home was burned down just 2 years ago. We walked around the remains and found pieces of the dishes. I just wanted to cry. Another homesite is at the top of the hill, but too muddy to get up there. We talked to the currect owner of the property. He is trying to find pictures before they burned it. There is a Boy Scout camp located in the meadow.(my dad was a member of the first Boy Scout troup and didn't even realize that it was family homestead property.)
Henry came to Modoc with Presleigh Dorris, driving cattle and horses in from Idaho. Both filed homesteads in 1870.
Grandma Catherine (Katie) -- Henry and Nancy Brown's daughter -- was born on Camas Prairie Feb 15,1865, near Boise Idaho, as they had to winter there on their way west. Her birth certificate was filed in Boise. Nancy died in Roseburg 1867-69. Henry and children (Willie, Sarah, Cyrus and Catherine) were in the Big Valley township, Siskiyou County, Yreka area in 1870. There is a Fitzhugh homestead south of McCloud, CA filed in the name of William Fitzhugh. It is still known as the 'old Fitzhugh place.'***HOW OLD DID YOU HAVE TO BE TO FILE A HOMESTEAD???*** I am figuring that Nancy and kids must have been staying in Roseburg with relatives while Henry was driving cattle from Idaho. We can not locate where she was buried here. Not in the Roseburg cemetery or surrounding ones. We figure she must have been buried on homestead property.
Well, I'm sure that I gave you more info than you asked for, but it is about the Fitzhugh line, stemming from Virginia. Hopefully, you have info on a Fitzhugh that married an Irish born gal. The LDS ladies suggested that I get a copy of Henry and Martha's marriage certificate in Yreka. Maybe there could be another clue?
