Well Belinda, the book is Reed's Surname Digest, but it's old and it's probably not accurate.I question several things in it, but that's what it said about the "Fitz" prefix.As to what you said about unbalanced people, well anything is possible in anyone's family tree I suppose...because this is my husband's tree I would be less likely to disagree with you (ha ha just kidding).Actually, my husband's ancestor James Gibbons added "fitz" to the name because he deserted the British Army--adultery, mental imparement, etc. that you mention most likely didn't apply to this situation--he added Fitz to avoid being found.Fairly common to either add a prefix or delete one to avoid being found.
