If the prefix did mean "illigitimate' son of, it woudn't make sense that anyone would want to add it to their name, especially back when, since both church & government frowned on fornification & people were often prosecuted for this, even in America. Since there is usually some grain of truth to most rumors, if a person did add Fritz to their name in those times, they could have been a little nuts, or the usual records might not exist, since such things were often covered up. It can be difficult to follow the trail if a person ends up in some kind of an assylum, since these types of records frequently aren't readily available.
