Interesting. What's the name of your book? If the prefix did mean "illigitimate' son of, it woudn't make sense that anyone would want to add it to their name, especially back when, since both church & government frowned on fornification & people were often prosecuted for this, even in America. Since there is usually some grain of truth to most rumors, if a person did add Fritz to their name in those times, they could have been a little nuts, or the usual records might not exist, since such things were often covered up. It can be difficult to follow the trail if a person ends up in some kind of an assylum, since these types of records frequently aren't readily available.
