I research the Irish Family History Foundation's database. It contains 12,000,000 surviving rcds for abt 65% of Irish counties. Rcds are increasingly sparse B4 1840, rare B4 1800.
Note 1 - Without a KNOWN county, the chance of an ancestor's rcds NOT being in this database is AT LEAST 35%.
Note 2 - Only 1/2 of Co. Cork's rcds are in this database.
Note 3 - The RC church kept control over most parish rcds from Tipperary (north). These are ONLY available thru the Tipperary Family History Research center at a substantial fee (regardless of outcome).
For Catherine Murphy B 1853 +/- 4 yrs, Castlegar, Galway, with a father forenamed John, I found 1 rcd in 1853. This fits your info almost perfectly. The exception being John vs Jonathan. It MAY be for your ancestor - no guarantee. A view of the detailed rcd SHOULD show her parent's names and other info. This info will validate/invalidate the rcd.
For John Fitzgibbon B 1851 +/- 4 yrs somewhere in Ireland with the father's forename unknown, I found 24 rcds: 1847 LIM, 1848 CRK, 1848 LIM, 1849 ROS, 2-1849 LIM, 1849 CRK, 1850 CRK, 3-1850 LIM, 3-1851 LIM, 1852 KIL, 1852 CRK, 1852 LIM, 2-1853 LIM, 4-1854 LIM, 1855 CRK, and 1855 TIP. Note - none of these are even close to GALway. One of these MAY be for your ancestor. However, you will need an exact DOB, parent(s) name(s), and/or placename to find the right rcd. This info MIGHT be on the church parish register where they married.
For John Fitzgibbon M 1876 +/- 4 yrs somewhere in Ireland, I found M rcds in 1873 DUB, 1873 CRK, 1875 LIM, 1876 CRK, 1878 LIM, and 1880 CRK. None are in GALway.
For Cat(herine) Murphy M ditto, I found 226 rcds. In these rcds, there are potential matches for ALL of the yr/cnty combinations shown for John above.
Do you know whether the two married in Ireland or America?
Google the Foundation's name to lead you to this database. Register, opt to be notified as rcds are added and browse. Pls post your search results to my genforum msg.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
