Read some of the information and managed to pickup some information that you may find interesting. Neddy was the son of James and grandson of Edmund in the text preceeding the story, but in the story Neddy says he is the son of Andrew and grandson of Andrew, originality for names not a strong point.
Now the lease for Moorgate farm expired on the death on Andrew (Neddy's uncle/father?) 10th November 1828. It was this that inspired him to go to the Earl of Derby, something to do with Neddy's Great-great-grandfather (Andrew again) saving the Earl James' life at the Battle of Wigan during the civil war (near Preston) maybe.
Neddy was married to Elizabeth, who is referred to as Nan in the story. She died 29th July 1853. Neddy died 11th April 1861 after living for a time with George at Stanacliffe Hall Farm. He is buried in St. James's cemetery in Heywood.
Another son, Andrew, died falling off his trap on Grislehurst Lane, 15th June 1891. His daughter Elizabeth, died 14th September 1896 and was the last member of the family to be a tenant of the farm since the civil war.
Now my grandfather Stanley (1.9.1910) was from Hooley Bridge on the road from Bury to Rochdale. His father was called James and possibly had an uncle called Abraham. So we have a bit of a gap at the moment between these dates.
