Pam,
There has been a lot of confusion over the decendents of Johannes Vogt (americanized to John Fite) and Peter Veit (americanized to Peter Fite). Both men came to America from Germany in the 1700's. Johannes in about 1740. He settled in Greenwich, Sussex County, N.J. Johannes had a son named Peter who moved to North Carolina. He and his family settled not far from the decendents of Peter (Veit) Fite, Sr. Who had arrived from Germany in 1725 aboard the ship "Jamaica Galley". He settled in Rowan County, N.C.

Peter (Veit) Fite, Sr. also had a son, Peter Fite, Jr. Now if all these Peter Fites begin to sound confusing don't be alarmed. They have been confusing people for years. Not only were they confusing but they named their sons Peter and it got more confusing.

Anyway, I don't think the Peter (Veit) Fite, Sr. was ever known as Johannes Veit but if I am wrong, maybe someone will correct me. The person you are referring to is Peter Veit, Sr. who came to America in 1725. Documentation can be found in the book "Carolina Cradle, Settlement of Northwest Carolina Frontier, 1747-1752" by Robert W. Ramsey, printed by UNC Press at Chapel Hill, 1964.

Hope this helps.

Helen
