Hi Susan -

Henry Delano was born in New Bedford, Mass. I've never heard the New Haven, CN connection before. My suggestion would be for you to contact the Heandsburg Historical Society. They have all the details you are seeking. Bailhoche, Grant, Doty, all married daughters of Henry Delano and Josefa Carrillo. Harmon Heald basically paid $200 US to purchase the land that Healdsburg sits on to the present day but it was basically a theft. Henry Delano died in 1849 and Josefa tried to maintain the land grant - 49,000 leagues - but was unable to do so. There were squatters, a land war, and also a language barrier. Her interests were basically overridden by the US/CA Govt. in order to get the land. Cyrus Alexander, if you've heard that name, was the caretaker for Henry Delano for the Sotoyome Land Grand. His legacy lives on in the Alexander Valley, No. of Healdsburg.

I have been researching this for at least 30 years and my sources are vast. Many books have been written. Here are 2 you might want to get a hold of: A Promised Land: Grantees, Squatters, and Speculators in the Healdsburg Land Wars - a Thesis by Hannah M. Clayborn submitted to Sonoma State University. Also, A Yankee Trader in California, 1826 - 1849. A dissertation written by Ronald Lee Miller, February 1972, U. of So. CA. You can also go to the San Diego Historical Society to read about Henry Delano's early life in San Diego. Henry Delano was a ship's captain and arrived in CA by way of the Horn. He was a trader and well known on the West Coast.

The contact at the Healdsburg Library is Holly Hoods. They are located at 221 Matheson St., Heladsburg, CA 95448. Phone - 707-431-3325.

Also, the Sonoma County Library has a really wonderful Genealogy section with lots of information too. They are in Santa Rosa. There is so much out there that it can become overwhelming if you let it. Bancroft also wrote a great deal. But, my suggestion is to begin with the Healdsburg Historical Society.

Hope this helps. I hear your confusion in what you write.

Sarah Coston
