Matilda Ellen Fishwick is in my family tree. She's part of my Thomas FISHWICK (b 1769 Euxton) descendents tree. She’s not a direct (blood) ancestor. She’s my 1st cousin 3x removed.

She was born in 1859 in Bolton, (where I'm originally from) [Mar qtr 1859 Bolton 8c 270] her parents were Thomas FISHWICK (b1833 Halliwell, Bolton) and Winifred NORRIS (his first wife). Winifred was born in Chorley and they were married there in 1857 [Sept qtr 1857 Chorley 8e 470]. They had two other children: Benjamin b1861 and Thomas b1866 both in Bolton. You’ll find the family on the 1861 census at 29 Abraham Street, Bolton [piece 2822/ folio 23]. Winifred died soon after Thomas was born and his father moved back to Preston before the 1871 Census. The FISHWICK branch of my tree jump around a lot Euxton, Chorley, Bolton, Preston....

Thomas FISHWICK married his second wife Ellen LEACH in Preston on 11 Mar 1871. Ellen LEACH already had a child, Sarah A. LEACH. At first I assumed it was from a first marriage. However, her marrige certificate says that she was a spinster (not widow) which suggests that Sarah may have been illigitimate. Also her father’s last name is LEACH suggesting that she had not married before.
They had at least one other child together, Winifred Ellen FISHWICK b1871 in Preston - she married Rbt. SUTCLIFFE in 1896

Matilda Ellen Fishwick married Richard FOWLER in 1882 in PRESTON [sept qtr Preston 8e 921]. They had at least 5 children: Richard b1885, Thomas b1888, John b1890, William b1893 and Elizabeth Ellen b1895. You’ll find them on the 1901 census at 27 Everton Gardens [3945/f46].

You can indeed find Matilda on the 1881 census at 29 Everton Gardens but Thomas her father was not dead. You’ll find him at 56 Newton Street, Preston [4230/f5]. Thomas died before the 1901 census but you can find Ellen FISHWICK (LEACH) living with her daughter (Matilda’s step sister) at 15 Kilshaw Lane, Preston [3952/f68]

Regards Andrew
