Looking for parents of Sarah (Sally) Fisher, Craw Co,PA
Sarah (Sally) Fisher, was born 12 Nov 1822 and died 9 Mar 1900, Vernon Twp., Crawford Co., PA.She is first mentioned in the 1830 will of Col. John Cotton, of Vernon Twp., Crawford Co., Pennsylvania, when he left the "indenture of Sally Fisher to his daughter, Peggy".
Sarah married David D. Williams, and their marriage notice says both are natives of Vernon Twp - which if she was raised by the Cotton family, that would make sense, since that's where they lived. There seemed to be several ties to the Cotton family, and as I researched that further, I found out that Peggy (or Margaret Cotton) never married. She is found living with David & Sarah Williams in the 1870 and 1880 census. So, I think they had more or less, a mother/daughter type of relationship.Margaret would have been 29 when her father died in 1830.
I also learned that Margaret's brother, William Cotton, never married either, and in the Cotton information, it says he adopted David D. Williams!!!At the courthouse I found where David (age 19 in 1843) petitioned the court for a guardian to be appointed for him and William Cotton was appointed as his guardian. Since David was age 19, I think William Cotton just sort of took him under his wing after David's father died in 1843.And since William didn't have any other heirs, he ends up leaving David 25 acres of his choice on his farm, plus all his belongings and money, and David was to give him a proper burial.
I checked Sarah's death notice at the Crawford Co. courthouse and, as my luck would have it, no parents are listed, but again she says she was born in Vernon Twp.
The Cotton family records hint about someone's parents being killed by Indians. My friend from the Genealogical Society tells me there weren't any Indian killings in Crawford county in the 1820's, so I wondered if Col. John Cotton may have came across the orphaned child on his military excursions.
Col. John Cotton was born abt 1751 Marsh Creek, York, Pa, died 24 Apr 1830 Vernon Twp., Crawford Co., Pa, married 16 Feb 1786 in Washington, Pa to Margaret Stockton. Per DAR application, it says he served in Rev War and also War of 1812, but both of those are too early for the parents of Sally, born 1822.
I would be very grateful for any and all suggestions.
Sherry
