Penny Fisher was full blooded Choctaw, according to papers filed in 1898 to enroll her children & grandchildren into the Choctaw Nation. She and Jacob Sessums appear in the 1830 census for Mississippi -- but subsequently traveled with 4 children to the Tribal Nation in 1832, after *giving up* their farmland in Mississippi courtesy of the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit. She is purportedly buried in Oklahoma in the oldest cemetary there for Indians -- but I haven't been able to confirm that yet.
Penny and Jacob lived on the Choctaw land in Oklahoma but she died in 1840.Jacob continued to farm the land and raise his children there as Choctaw. However, by 1850 (age, 73) he shows up with Redding Sessums and family on the Census for Shelby County, Texas.
One of Jacob and Penny's sons and grandsons filed for official Choctaw standing due to government scrutiny of the rolls and were initially granted enrollment in the Choctaw Nation in 1898.That was subsequently overturned by the Dawes inquisition, er, uh, purge. Her family appealed over and over again to the U.S. government for Choctaw recognition but fell victim to the multitude of courtroom timelines deliberately withheld from those appealing the Dawes Roll decisions.Every appeal document I've read was denied due to missed timelines, thanks to the wonderful scheming of those trying to limit the enrollment numbers.
If you have any additional information on Jacob Sessums, please email me!
