Fisher Families of Franklin, Colbert, Lauderdale Counties, AL
This message is to all of the Fisher researchers looking at their families in northern AL. Some of us have been trying to find where our lines have originated and also where they connect as our families lines seem to pass each other in a few generations.
I have a few questions and then a theory...please don't shhot the messenger here but I hope it will open the door for some new leads...
There is a James Marion Fisher, born April 5, 1837 in AL and he married Elizabeth Whitlock. In a few messages, his father is listed as James M. Fisher, Sr, born about 1811 married to a Cinthia. My question is how do we know that that was James Marion's father's name??? I could not find him in any AL census-
There is a James M. Fisher, Jr. and Sr. on the 1850 census in neighboring Lauderdale Co, but that James Sr, was 46, born in TN. There are also Green, Benjamin and Jackson Fisher, all born in TN, found in 1850 Lauderdale-some also in 1840. Those names are prominent in my Fisher line.
I do know that Nicholas Fisher, born about 1780 in SC is the father of Carter Fisher, born about 1809 in TN and married to a LUCINDA and also Nicholas Jr. born about 1820 in TN also. Carter and Nicholas Jr are on the 1840 Franklin County, AL Census. There seems to be a strong case that the Nicholas born in 1780 was the youngest son of a Nicholas Fisher born in 1730 in either Germany or VA and settled in SC. Several of his children went to TN and then AL.
Carter, and Nicholas Sr and Jr went to Hot Springs/Garland Counties in AR in mid 1840's.
On the 1850 Census-Carter's children are listed as:
Mary E. Fisher, born about 1835, AL
JAMES M. FISHER-born about 1837 AL
Margaret Fisher-born 1839 in AL
JOHNSON FISHER-born about 1840-1841 in AL
WILIAM FISHER-born about 1842 in AL
Carter Fisher-born about 1845 in Arkansas
ISAAC BENJAMIN FISHER-born about 1849 in Arkansas and died May 25, 1920 in Colbert Co, AL
HIRAM Fisher-born about 1852 in AR and died probably before 1900 in Colbert or Franklin Co.
Carter's wife Lucinda is issued a land grant in Franklin County, AL in June 1854. I cannot find her or most of children on 1860 census-another theory of mine is that part of Franklin Co census is missing because there are a handful of my ancestors that were there but are not on census.
JAMES M. Fisher is on 1860 Franklin Co census with wife Elizabeth and infant daughter.
By 1870 census, you find most of the family.
JAMES M. FISHER is on 1870 Colbert County Census, page 73. Brother JOHNSON, a widower, at age 27 is living with him, along with 3 children.
LUCINDA, HIRAM, ISAAC are on 1870 Colbert Co Census, on Page 2.
WILLIAM FISHER, age 30, with wife Mary, children are on page 70 Colbert Co, census.
What I am proposing is that Carter and Lucinda are the parents of at least James, Johnson, and William.
None can be found in Arkansas after the 1850 census. None seem to be found in AL before 1850.
Carter may have had another name that he went by...You will find that Isaac Benjamin went by both Isaac and also Benjamin on different census reports, etc. This Cinthia, offered as a mother to James Marion is close to Lucinda.
Green/Greenberry, Johnson, Benjamin, James, William, Nicholas, seem to be common names throughout generations.
Some of the earliest Fisher children of Nicholas, born 1730 married Tubbs/Tubb who also settled in Northern AL with our Fishers.
I offer this as a possible explanation and would appreciate any type of evidence/data to help support sorting out these lines. You can also email me and I'd be happy to send to you a family report that gives more information.
