Hey Joni. I sent for Willian fisher's recoreds thay are kinda Interesting. Thay say that his offical military recored said that he deserted. But there are alot of affidavids of witneses that say he didnt. He said that he was captuered. It had a application for a pinsion in his name, and several in Marys name Most of them were rejected besase like i said the record sayd he deserted. But thay finaly gave her one besace she was able to give enuff evidince to say that he didnt desseart. also on one page it gave his age as 63 years. And it was dated 1 july 1901 that would make him born about 1838.It gives his death date On a sworn affidavied as 6 august 1908. Residence Is Russelville , Franklin County. apparently William and Mary Lived in Russelvillein the late 1800;s early 1900;s becse it mentions them haveing a town lot in Russelville. with a 2 room house. one page sayes Box House???? ( I think, hard to read)
There are several diffrent applications starting in 1901 and going throough 1918 . the first one is William Trying to get a pension He said that he didnt Deseart but that he was Captered and confind in Rock Island prison. There was a recored of him taking the oath of alligance March 1865 in Louisville Kentucky!!!! if he desarted ( 1864is the date given that he was awol. ) why did he wait so long to take the oath ? and why In Kentucky!!! I am sure thre were Federal athouritys In alabama that could give it to him. so I think he was captuered .
On one Of Mary's applications Dated 10 December 1918 it gives Mary's age as 81 years 4 mounths and 3 days. that would put her bearth about 7 August 1837. She also states on 2 diffrent applications that She and william were Married before the civil war. On one it says "Married in the Year 1855" and on another ( Much Later Applicatipn) She said Thay were "Married about 2 years before the war sarted". That would be about 1859 .There is no Mention of her Madin name. Or either one's Place of bearth. But It did say That william enlisted Into The Confederate Army 10 July 1862 In Tuscumbia Alabama. In Into Company C Jeff Forrests Regiment. And that later He was In company C 11th alabama cavalry . Mary Also On a sworen Afedavid sayed her recolection was that he was in company C 4th alabama Cavalry.I found out that The Jeff Forrest Regiment was also called the 4th alabama Cavalry and that later it was consolidated with thw 11th alabama Cavalry. apperintly thay Called themselves the Jeff forrest Regiment becase there was another reigiment called the 4th alabama Cavalry. ( and Maybe 2 , Roddy's and Russall's)Kinda confussing to have 3 diffrent regiments called the 4th alabama. The Company that he was in was recruted in Franklin County.
It also appears that William and Mary couldnt spell. Becase thay signed with there mark. This is a pretty thick file. Most of it is Mary Trying to prove that william was not a desearter. But that he was Captuered and mistakenly put down as awol. She said that he did return home on a few occasions but that he always returned to the Army. And that he had a furloh.
I hope this gives you some more clues as to witch one of the william fisher's is our william. Apperintly thay owned no other land in any other county at the time of the applications. And At one point Mary said She was veary Poor and needed the money.
Please get back with me and let me know what you think.
Thanks
cliff
