Initially I was swayed by the suggestion both Fish volumes make that Nathan Fish of Pepperell is one and the same as Nathan Fish, son of Nathan and Deborah (Barrows) Fish, who was born 2 October 1694 in Falmouth. However, I have rejected that identification due to the fact that Nathan was baptized in the First Parish Church of Pepperell in 1748. His age at time of baptism was 40. That would place his birth at about 1708, not 1694. While it's possible that they're one in the same, I don't think it likely. Since the early Groton records were destroyed during the Indian Wars, I've come to the conclusion that we may never know his ancestry. It is worthy of note that the Fish name was used interchangeabley with Fiske at time in the Groton records, and also that there was another Nathan Fish born in Groton in 1730, the son of Rev. Joseph and Rebecca (Dana) Fish. Rev. Joseph was descended from the Falmouth/Barnstable Fish family, so there definitely seems to be some kind of Groton/Falmouth connection. I'd love to hear from anyone with additional facts and/or alternative theories.
