I'm seeking the parentage of my great-great-grandfather, Robert Finnie, who was born about September 1830 in Scotland. According to his biography, he immigrated "when young" with his parents to Canada. When he was about 19, he went to Louisiana and then came out to California about 1850. He witnessed a marriage about 1851 in Montreal for a couple named Reid & Dryden, but I'm uncertain if his parents lived in the Montreal area. He subsequently married in Montreal in 1853 to Ellen Dryden, sister of the bride whose marriage he witnessed earlier. He and Ellen went immediately to California where they lived the rest of their lives. He died in 1891, in California. She died in 1907. They had several children, among them Walter Forsythe, Alison, Isabel Jean, Robert Dryden, Mary R., Earl S., and twins who died at birth.
I suspect Forsythe is Robert's mother's maiden name. Walter may be his father's name. My grandmother was Robert Finnie's last surviving grandchild. She said her family never mentioned any Finnie relatives, other than her immediate family.
If anyone can provide any particulars about Robert Finnie's family, I'd be most grateful.
