YDNA Discovery - Finney's of Donegal and Derry North Ireland
Posted by: gerald finney (ID *****2442) Date: July 28, 2012 at 11:22:02

Greetings,

The Finney DNA Project hosted by Family Tree DNA has made an interesting discovery utilizing YDNA testing of living Finney's. A descendent of a Robert Finney, born 1767 in Donegal Ireland, was recently tested. This Robert Finney was Presbyterian and he was married to Margaret Parks and they had a son named Joseph Finney born in York County, PA in 1801. This Joseph married a Mary Mitchell and they moved to Pease Township, Belmont County, Ohio and started a very large family often referred to as the Martin Ferry's branch of the Finney family.

The YDNA markers of this descendent matched the YDNA markers of all of the participants in the Lineage I subgroup of Robert Finney. This Robert Finney was also Presbyterian and was born in 1668 in Derry (Londonderry) and came to America settling in New London, Chester County, PA and started a farm called Thunder Hill.

We now know without any doubt there is a relationship between the two Scot Irish Finney families originating in the Parishes of Donegal and Derry, Province of Ulster, Ireland.

Gerald Finney,
