I have come across information recently that states Joseph Finney Sr is the son of James Finney and Ann Arnold; that Joseph Finney Sr had siblings Michael Finney (md Catherine Armstrong), Jane Finney (md Stephen Arnold) and Elizabeth Finney.
I have long suspected this to be the case but have never been able to prove it.
Joseph Finney Sr's oldest daughter was named Ann. Joseph moved with, and lived among, the Quakers. This tradition among this line of Finney's continued down through my grandfather who married a United Brethren (sect of Quacker).
Michael Finney's wife, Catherine Armstrong, daughter of Robert Armstrong, was a Quaker. Michael Finney, with James Patton, was executor of the will of James Finney who died at Balcony Falls on 14 Dec 1743 with Capt John McDowell during a fire fight with renegade Indians. James Finney was one of seven men buried in unmarked graves on the McDowell property which bordered that of Michael Finney.
Joseph Finney Sr's son, Joseph, was born in 1765 in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. It was not unusual for people to travel great distances to be married as only certain churches were recognized by England.
Married at the Old Swedes Holy Trinity Church in Wilmington was Simon Hadley, from Augusta County, Virginia, also Quaker, whose Grandfather immigrated from Ireland and whose land straddled the Pennsylvania, Delaware border. Simon Hadley married Bridget Foote.
Augusta County, Virginia was also the home of Michael Finney and Catherine Armstrong.
Joseph Finney Sr and Simon Hadley are next found in Chatham County, North Carolina in 1772. In 1781 Joseph is found in Orange County; in 1786 in Surry County where he died in 1799.
Executor of his will, in 1800, was Thomas Hadley, son of Simon Hadley and Bridget Foote.
Many have written that Joseph Finney Sr is a descendant of Robert and Dorothea Finney. I do not believe this to be true. My research leads me to believe that Joseph Finney, Sr, is the son of James Finney and Ann Arnold, brother of Michael Finney.
It is known that Michael Finney and Jane Finney Arnold were brother and sister; Stephen Arnold the brother-in-law of Michael.
If anyone has any information that would further connect Joseph Finney Sr (wife Ruth) to James Finney and Ann Arnold, I would be interested in corresponding.
