Bill: My research suggests all Finneran's are from County Roscommon or County Galway.
My ancestors are from Gallows Town now incorporated into Roscommon Town. I found them by searching the Roscommon Parish Register in the Index of Baptisims 1840-1859 at the new Church (Cathedral?) in Roscommon Town. Further, I found the ancestoral housing sites through the Co. Roscommon Heritage & Geneology society with offices in Strokestown. To be successful in a search in Ireland you will need full names of husband and wife since there are many William Finnerans so if you can pair him up with his spouse you can be certain you have the right Bill Finneran. I have an uncle Bill Finneran, now deceased. He, as my father was raised in Westchester County NY. Interesting to note, their Father, although born in Ireland did not acknowledge it on any official records here in the US. For some reason all his offical records such as his wedding license and the birth certificates of his 9 children all listed his country of origin as the US.
