Your Capt. James Finley sounds more like the son of James and Agnes Reid of Montgomery County, VA. Descendants of James Finley Generation No. 1 1. James6 Finley (James5, Alexander4, James3, John2 Finlay, James1 Finley) died Bef. 10 August 1802 in Wythe Co, VA. He married Agnes Reid. She died Bef. 23 July 1799 in Wythe Co(?), VA. Notes for James Finley: !Stout thinks his wife was Agnes and they were in Augusta County, VA in 1747. Messer claims James was born 1721 in Chester County, PA and moved to Augusta County, VA in 1737. !Monette thinks James (1720-1780?) married Agnes and moved to VA in 1742. Monette also quotes France, "Of James Finley who moved to Virginia, 1740, died 1780, wife Agnes, I first thought he was a son of James and Elizabeth (Patterson) Finley, but since find that James, son of James, died in Cumberland County, Penn." !James, Sr. and James, Jr. first found on Crockett's list of tithables in area from Wm Sayers to Head of Holstein in 1771 (Kegley, New River Thithes, p. 9). On 3 August 1772 he entered 191 acres on Read Creek (VSL, reel 33, Book C:212). DAR application of Margaret Weston Suiter (#46287) of Wytheville (aged 90+ in 1992), says this James married Agnes Reid and is the one who wrote will dated 23 July 1799; proved 10 August 1802 in Wythe County (WB 1:220). His will refers to only son, James Finley [most likely Capt. James Finley] and to "well beloved grandson, William Finley, sole executor rest of estate." The will of Capt. James Finley, written 15 October 1800; proved 15 April 1801 in Wythe County (WB 1:176), does refer to son, William Finley. More About James Finley: Christening: Abt. 1720, Chester Co(?), PA Notes for Agnes Reid: !Based on DAR application of Margaret Weston Suiter, Wytheville, VA, dated 31 December 1937 (#46287). Child of James Finley and Agnes Reid is: + 2 i. Capt James7 Finley, died Bef. 15 October 1800 in Wythe Co, VA. Generation No. 2 2. Capt James7 Finley (James6, James5, Alexander4, James3, John2 Finlay, James1 Finley) died Bef. 15 October 1800 in Wythe Co, VA. He married Mary Henderson Abt. 1778 in Augusta Co, VA. Notes for Capt James Finley: !From "History of Bland Co. (VA)," Bland County Centennial Corporation, 1961, p. 95: "James Finley, Sr., Captain of Militia, was among those who won particular applause for their great activity and full execution of all orders in the Revolutionary War. He received a large tract of land lying in Bland County on the Crab Orchard for his services in the Revolutionary War and it was to this tract that his son, James, Jr. came. The tract contained about one thousand acres, and was located where the present town of Bland now stands. The Finley farm, how in possession of Mrs. A.W. Suiter, is part of the original acreage. February 26, 1783, part of this plot was deeded to Thomas Dunn. That part of the Finley lands, now in the possession of Mrs. A.W. Suiter, has been in the Finley family since 1783. Captain Finley's son, James, married Eunice Bonham, and their son, James married Rebecca Dunn; their son, Thomas Nye Finley, married first a Miss Ewald and then Laura Lester ... The Finley home was built about 1850 and is a white frame building with a large fireplace in each room. The back part of the house has been added in recent years, but the front portion is the original. The Finley family are of Irish descent, settling first in Pennsylvania, then emigrating to present Wythe and Bland Counties." !James, Sr. and James, Jr. first appear on Crockett's list of tithables in 1771 --area, Wm. Sayers to Head of Holston River (Kegley's New River Tithes, p. 9). Captain James and his father James, Sr. appear in Montgomery County records as early as 1773, in Order Book 1, page 2, indicating they were in the area before the formation of Montgomery County. The first mention of "Captain," was dated 10 June 1782, with rank taken 9 November 1791 (OB 1: 269). However, there is a note in Order Book 2:320, that James Finley took oath in Capt of militia on 4 April 1781. Predating that in Order Book 1778-1780:71, is a note that James Finley was recommended 1st Lieutenant in the militia. Fincastle County deeds show James Finley, Jr. bought 100 acres on Reed Creek from John Crockett and Wm. Sawyers in January 1773 (Summers, "Annals of Southwest Virginia," p. 667). On 1 May 1781, one of the James Finleys was found guilty of living in Adultery (Summers, p. 752). On 26 May 1790, he appeared on a list of officers for the County Militia and was recommended as Commissioner of the Peace (Summers, p. 1356). On 17 November 1797, he appeared as a Justice in a court case (Summers, p. 1365). There are many more entries in the Montgomery and Wythe County Court Orders, but James, Sr. is not always distinguished from Capt. James [James, Jr.]. !His will, written 15 October 1800; proved 15 April 1801 (Wythe County WB 1:176) states, "I have 1592 acres of land in the State of Kentucky on the waters of Green River of which land I leave and bequeath to my son William Finley, 200 acres and five dollars in money to my nephew Jonathan Henderson I leave 192 acres, the rest to be divided equally among the rest of my children according to quantity and quality. The plantation I live on and all moveable property I leave to my wife as long as she lives, or to my youngest child comes to age." !According to Tammhy Giancola, tlgiancola@hotmail.com, 19 April 2000, Capt.
