I am trying to find more information and possible relatives that descended from a great-uncle born in Finland. Juho Jaakko Karihtala was my grandmother's oldest brother. He was born in Haapavesi, Finland on 8 Jun 1882. I found evidence of a passport application with a destination of Amerika from 1901 from the Finnish Institute of Migration website (http://www.migrationinstitute.fi/). After that, the trail goes cold. It seems he was given a new name upon arrival in the US. I do not know which route he took, nor when he traveled. My 90 year old aunt (this man's niece) told me that she remembered seeing post cards from a man named John Hendrickson, but she did not know how or if he was related to their family. John Hendrickson makes sense as his name was Juiho and his father was Heikki. My aunt went on to say that she believed that he died and was buried in Utah. Based on this tip, and from information from the Kirkkoherranvirastu document that I got from Finland which showed a death year of 1924 for this man, I searched for deaths of John Hendrickson in 1924. I found a possible match of a John Hendrickson who was born in Finland on 8 Jun 1884 and died in SLC, UT on 12 Sep 1924. Though the birth year is off by exactly 2 years, I believe this could by my great-uncle.
My aunt also told me that she believed that John Hendrickson had a daughter and that his wife (do not know name) died in childbirth. She believed that the doctor who treated his wife ended up adopting this child. This was supposed to have happened in California. I do not know the year of location in California.
My question is, how should I proceed with so little information. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. From what scant evidence I have, I get the impression that this man was somewhat destitute and moved frequently throughout the western US. His grave is unmarked in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
