Vicky-

Not to be a stick in the mud here, but I would be careful about scanning and sending old pictures with studio names on them- here's my experience. Somehow, somewhere, I found the only picture I could find with my grandmother. It has a studio marking on it. Well, I figured it's got to be up there in years, plus, it was during the 30's, 40's?, and that was when they had the "Suitcase" photographers go around to houses and do these photos.

I thought I did a decent search for the studio, couldn't find it, so I thought, okay, I can copy the picture. ALAS, no I couldn't. I had scanned and sent a copy to a cousin, who posted it on her website- By miracles upon miracles- the studio contacted my cousin and demanded the picture be taken down or be sued. HA! Well, I was put in touch with the studio, and I explained all that I did to ensure I wasn't enfringing, and I "assumed" that it was okay. NOT.

Well, the summary to the end of the story- They said they would need to find the photo in their records, make copies, and we could purchase them. About six weeks later, they contacted us, and believe it or not, said they need our address to send a permission letter saying that we could now make copies of the photo, as they no longer had the photograph on files. What luck! Here, I was shaking in my shoes, thinking I was going to be sued, or have to pay alot of money for these copies!

I know lots of people do this without realizing it, scanning and copying that is, because I run across people who I meet at genealogy fairs, etc. and mention it (Especially if I want that particular picture). I understand we are talking about 1890's, there abouts, but you never know. I think I would take the time to at least google them on the internet to see if they exist. If not, contact a copyright place and find out if it's okay. I would think so after about 100 years, but that's what I get for thinking! LOL

Either way, you have an exciting treasure. I think I would also post this on the Michigan forum and the Ontario forum here on Genforum, that might be of help (If you haven't done so already). I know there used to be a photo gallery on the HisKi project (A Finnish Website)- You'll have to google that, they just changed their address and I haven't got it down yet. Anyhow, you can post the pictures there, and see if anyone can identify them. I used to look at them in hopes I would find someone! (Even the really old ones!)

I hope this is of some help, I don't want you to go through what I did. I wish we would have a seminar like that around here- it would be helpful!

Keittää
