Stuart-
Personally, I would post it here, if it isn't too much trouble to type.I wouldn't worry with the aumlauts, etc..I think I would also ask someone on the HisKi Project-
www.genealogia.fi
Which is the #1 source for Finnish Research on the Internet._____poika means son, the first part usually is the father's name, if you have Stuart Matinpoika Dodge, it would translate that your father's name is Matti, Matthew.Daughter would be in the same form, Liisa Matintytär Dodge, or Matti's daughter, Liisa. Vaimo- Married (to woman, I believe?), Puoliso- Married (to man?- I'm going on my "list" of translations I was told so long ago!)Synt.- Born, Kuollut- death- Course, alot of these in records, I've noticed are abbreviated, you'll just have to look at it, and notice certain dates- like you would know that the first date is most likely the birthdate, give the person about 20 years for the marriage date or so, and then a long time from then, (hopefully), the death date. (PS- take note of European dating- they do the day/month/year vs. American version of Month/day/year)
Be careful of a death date, though- It might seem far fetched, but alot of times, you have to research the parish records, when folks migrated, they may have not reported back, and after so many years, they had been declared dead by the parish.Roughly about 75 years, I gather from my records. There are a few others to watch for, but I would have to see the record myself to give an honest opinion what I thought it translated to!I'm sort of a "got the jist" researcher, I must admit, when it comes to reading parish records in Finnish, fortunately, I must be good at it, because I've had a few Finnish relatives come back and tell me I got it right! Personally, I always believed if you had to pay to know your family, perhaps you aren't meant to know.I have quite a few hundred ancestors well documented, and only had to spend $500 at the most for the almost 10 year journey that I just was very diligent about.
I would also check out cyndislist.com she's a reputable genealogist with excellent ideas, and could help you out in this without spending a dime, or at least, too much money.I hope this was remotely helpful, and good luck- it really is an amazing language to translate!
